Rachel Gehr began her ballet training at Central Indiana Academy of Dance and was a member of Central Indiana Dance Ensemble from 2005-2016. She spent her summers attending summer programs at Ballet West, School of American Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Rachel attended Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. There, she was awarded the Premier Young Artist Scholarship Award. She graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Ballet and an Outside Field in Arts Management. Among her instructors were: Kyra Nichols, Carla Korbes, Michael Vernon, Sarah Wroth, Christian Claessens, and Sasha Janes. During her time at IU, she performed in George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Valse Fantasieand La Source, as well as Jerome Robbins’ Antique Epigraphs and The Concert, and Michael Vernon’s The Nutcracker.
Rachel joined Ballet Arizona in Phoenix, Arizona in 2020. With Ballet Arizona, she has performed in George Balanachine’s Serenade, Borree Fantasque, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Emeralds, The Four Temperaments, Square Dance, La Valse as well as Justin Peck’s In Creases, Christopher Wheeldon’s Within The Golden Hour and Ashton’s Les Patineurs. In addition, she’s performed in Ib Andersen’s Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, The Four Seasons, The Rite of Spring and The Nutcracker.
Ms. Houston rejoined Saint Louis Ballet in 2015, when she was given the position of Ballet Mistress and Director of Education and Outreach. Originally from Detroit, she received her training from Theresa Crawford, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and the Virginia School of the Arts under the direction Petrus Bosman and David Keener. A former company dancer with Saint Louis Ballet, Ms. Houston performed featured roles in ballets by numerous choreographers including George Balanchine, Gen Horiuchi, and Francis Patrelle, as well as performing as a guest artist internationally. A teacher since 1998, Ms. Houston was at Alexandra Ballet for twelve years, where she taught, choreographed, served on the Board and as Administrator, eventually earning the title of Co-Artistic Director. Also a former Director for Regional Dance America, she participated in eleven festivals in the MidStates region and nationally. As Ballet Mistress for SLB, Ms. Houston rehearses repertoire and works closely with guest choreographers and repetiteurs including Christopher D’Amboise, Tom Gold, Emery LeCrone, Miriam Madhaviani, Nilas Martins, Francis Patrelle, Amy Seiwert, and Artistic Director Gen Horiuchi.
